8 Easy Ways To Keep Snakes Away From Your Yard

Snakes really don’t bother me. They are gentle and shy and prefer to be left alone. However, it’s not always fun when you’re gardening or lounging in your backyard and a snake is slithering at your feet. If you’re not a big fan of snakes, don’t worry. There are several ways to keep snakes out of your garden without using harsh chemicals or harsh methods. here they are!

1. Cut off their food supply

Snakes are attracted to a number of things. They eat mice and rats, but they also eat birdseed and discarded fruit. If you have a compost bin, make sure it is completely closed. If you have bird feeders in your yard, try to keep them around the perimeter of your yard and as far away from your home as possible.

2. Lemon plant

A very simple way to deter snakes is to plant lemongrass in your garden. Snakes hate the smell of citrus and fortunately mosquitoes hate it!

3. Citrus lotion

Speaking of citrus fruits, you can add lemon or orange peel and slices to a pot of water. Leave the fruit in the water for 24 hours. Spray the solution on patio furniture and around deck/porch stairs to deter snakes from getting too close.

4. Maintain your garden

If you have a lot of weeds and piles of sticks or other debris lying around your yard, these are the perfect hiding places. If you keep your garden tidy and maintained, snakes will be less likely to call it home.

5. Seal your house

You don’t want snakes in your garden, and you certainly don’t want them in your home. Make sure to seal all cracks in your foundation and around doors and windows. You should also make sure there are no holes in window screens etc.

6. DIY Snake Repeller

Snake repellents filled with chemicals can harm your pets, family members, and plants. You can make your own natural snake repellent using equal amounts of cinnamon oil and clove oil. Spray the solution around the perimeter of your house, yard, and anywhere you suspect snakes might be hiding.

7. Mothballs

Not only do mothballs deter insects, but they also deter snakes. You can place mothballs around your foundation and back porch to deter them. However, mothballs can be highly toxic to children and pets, so you should not have mothballs around.

8. Move them

If you’ve tried everything, you can also buy humane snake traps and put them in your garden. When you catch a snake, leave it in a wooded area away from your house!
